URGENT ~ Temporary Homes Needed
We have only been able to rescue a few cats in 2022/2023, because just one foster parent has been available. We have never had a facility, therefore there is no building with a staff. Our nonprofit rescue’s Board members have sadly turned away requests to help abandoned cats whose owners who have moved or passed away. Compassionate people notify us when they see hungry, homeless, injured strays, and it has been hard to say we cannot rescue the kittens and cats, because we have no foster spaces. Please volunteer to become a foster parent. We pay the medical bills at our veterinary location. Winter is coming, and they desperately need temporary homes. Can you step in? We will explain more details. Here is the foster application:

If you have a question about the form, you can email [email protected].

Rescue Telephone Number
Since Brighthouse merged with Spectrum, our telephone service has had technical problems, which their support representatives assure us they are working to overcome. If you do not get an answer on our rescue telephone line (hear no voice mail announcement with instructions on what information to leave us, nor a way for you to leave a recording), please use the contact form on this site, or email with as much information as possible. Hang in there with us while we wait on Spectrum (https://www.spectrum.com/contact/contact.html) to resolve their problem(s).
Adoptable Cats' Status
We have very few cats available for adoption at this time due to a lack of foster homes. Since we have no facility and no foster home space, we are at an all-time low. If you are interested in fostering, please fill out a foster home application on our link under "Contact" in the drop down menu for "foster home application."

Beloved Cats Alone in Home
Owner died during the night. Charity, Priya, Missy and Corey
These four cats were like children to their single owner, their mother, and they have been waiting for her to come home. There is a discount for adopting Corey and Missy as a pair.
Missy, spayed female, medium length fur, was born 11/27/06. She had regular dental work since she was adopted, including necessary tooth extractions.
Missy is up to date on her shots through Dec. 2015. She adores her friend Corey, and they would do well to be adopted together. Missy's owner passed away October 23, 2015, and she and Corey are in the house. Her owner had her groomed professionally recently. She loves to look out the window and hang out with her man Corey.

Corey is a neutered male, short-hair, born in January 2010.
Corey's owner died during the night on 10/23/2015. In her will, she asked if Backdoor Friends could find a loving home for him in the event anything happened to her. His dear cat friend is shy Missy, and it would be wonderful if they could be adopted together.
Corey is a neutered male, up to date on his shots except he is due to have his Rabies booster. He had his teeth cleaned in February. He has big expressive eyes.

Stray Cats in the Cold?
Please check out this site for more information about caring for cats in the cold if you cannot take them in yourself. A feral cat advocate can advise you on creating shelter that will carry them through all kinds of weather. Sometimes the worst enemies to homeless cats are people who do not realize they are worth saving. There are kind people out there who will help with donations of food, straw, tarp, wooden pallets and nontoxic insulation to get shelter off the damp, cold ground.

Rescued Tortie: Kittens Coming Soon
A stray young pregnant Tortoiseshell ran up to cat owners Zozi and Shane, who fed her outside. They have two senior cats with health issues as well as a two-cat limit in their area, so they cannot adopt her. She is so friendly, she jumped in Zozi's lap and rubbed up against her. They brought her inside, got her vet checked, and she is ready to deliver her kittens in the next two weeks. "Firefly" is FIV/Felk negative, dewormed and had a good health exam.

New 2015 Clinical Trial: Improvement of Aggression Between Housemate Cats
Two main features distinguish the new 2015 trial from previous study phases:
o One, it is longer, 15 week duration. Three months of treatment.
o Two, it is a comparison of two different pheromone formulations -- neither of which are on the market or available. This is the next generation. Should be even better. Should learn more about cats that do not get along and how to help them.
o Previous participants may enroll if they still qualify. Please share or encourage others you know to participate.
o Enrollment will include 70 participants before April 28th 2015. Click the link below to read the flyer and get the contact numbers.

Novi High School Telecast
Lynx-Point, neutered male "Sky" was Pet of the Week today, October 24, 2014, on the Cat's Eye News telecast at Novi High School. He is a Ragdoll, a large breed, whose owner went into a nursing home. He is on a special, prescribed diet and doing well on it. His owner had him front declawed, something we do not advise.
Sky is available for adoption. See our gallery, drop down menu "All Adoptable Cats" for more information.

Financial News:
Sometimes debt is a way of life for nonprofit organizations, but we would rather operate in the black. When we do not have enough foster homes and/or do not have enough in the bank to pay for new rescues' incoming health exams, vaccinations, tests and treatments, we are not able to take more abandoned and displaced cats and kittens.
We did not mail 2014 Spring/Summer rescue newsletters, because they cost about $3 a piece. Before 2014, they have been mailed biannually to our database for no charge for at least a decade, and since supporters number almost 700 addresses now, the cost increases accordingly. We plan on having a fall newsletter and hopefully having enough resources to get back on schedule in a few months.
Whenever someone adopts from us, becomes a foster parent or specifically requests to be a part of our mailing list, they are added to our database.
Adoption fees are one way to offset some of the cost of caring for our rescues. Direct donations are another. Grants require applications to be filled out. We have to include yearly statistics (a lot of information to be submitted) to the donor company or organization who then selectively chooses among their many deserving applicants the successful recipient. Sometimes it takes months before we hear if we receive a grant from them or not. That is a long wait. Most of the time we cannot compete with well-known, large animal rescues, and people usually don't think about a small local group. Corporate giving campaigns are other avenues where we are thankful to receive donations such as Kroger Community Rewards and Smile.Amazon.com. Awards! Backdoor Friends won the June 2014 "Hearts for Heroes Award" from Thornton and Grooms in Farmington Hills, MI. Thank you! See photo below. http://www.thorntonandgrooms.com
Fund raising is a constant effort to stay afloat. If you hear of an opportunity for our small rescue to apply for a grant or participate in a company giving campaign, please let us know. Here
Thank you to all our supporters who participate in our success!
